Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) Weight Loss Injections – Now Available in the UK

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable medication that was originally licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, it has also shown remarkable results in supporting weight loss, and is now being prescribed by healthcare professionals across the UK as part of private weight management programmes.

Mounjaro works by regulating your appetite and supporting metabolic balance — helping you feel full for longer, eat less, and lose weight more effectively than with lifestyle changes alone.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

Mounjaro is the first medication to act as a dual agonist of GLP-1 and GIP receptors. These are natural hormones involved in appetite regulation and insulin control.

  • GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1): Reduces hunger, slows digestion, and promotes satiety.

  • GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide): Enhances insulin response and further supports appetite control.

Is Mounjaro Approved for Weight Loss in the UK?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is approved by the MHRA in the UK for managing type 2 diabetes. It is also prescribed off-label for weight loss in patients with obesity or weight-related health risks, under the guidance of a qualified clinician.

A weight loss-specific version of tirzepatide — called Zepbound — has been under review for obesity treatment in the UK and may be available soon, but Mounjaro is already being prescribed for this purpose in private clinics.

Note: NHS availability for weight loss is currently limited. Mounjaro is most commonly accessed through private medical weight loss programmes.

How Does Mounjaro Compare to Wegovy and Ozempic?

Many patients exploring medical weight loss options may have heard of Wegovy or Ozempic, both of which contain semaglutide, another GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Key Differences:

  • Effectiveness: Mounjaro has shown the most significant weight loss results in clinical trials — up to 22% of total body weight, which exceeds the average outcomes seen with Wegovy or Ozempic.

  • Mechanism of Action: Mounjaro is the only medication that targets two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), potentially leading to more powerful appetite suppression and metabolic improvement.

Regulatory Status:

  • Wegovy is officially licensed for weight loss in the UK and available via private clinics and some NHS trusts.

  • Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and is used off-label for weight loss in private clinics.

Side Effects: All three medications can cause similar side effects, including nausea, indigestion, or constipation. Mounjaro may have slightly higher rates of gastrointestinal side effects, particularly during dose escalation.

Is Mounjaro Right for You?

Mounjaro may be a good option if:

  • You've tried Wegovy or Ozempic without the desired results

  • You’re looking for a more potent treatment option

  • You meet the criteria for medical weight management (BMI and/or weight-related health conditions)

  • You're committed to long-term weight and lifestyle change under medical supervision
